Starting a House Cleaning Business

In this recession, many people have lost their full time jobs. A lot of these people have decided to start home small businesses in order to give them money. One option for these folks is to start a house cleaning business.

Many books and websites imply that starting a house cleaning business is easy as cake. Now, don’t get me wrong, it is certainly not as hard as some other small businesses, but that in no way makes it easy.

One of the hardest things to deal with in a house cleaning business is the people after you have gotten the job. Many people have a stigma against house cleaners. They think that they are below them. They may try to get you to do things that you didn’t agree to or they may talk down to you. Stand your ground, but don’t overdo it, you want these people to respect you, but not fire you.

However, if you do not market your business in the first place–you will have no customers to be nit-picky! You must have a marketing plan and strategy before you even start cleaning. Figure out about how much money you need every month. Then figure out how much a typical client will pay for monthly cleaning. Divide the first figure by the second. Now you know the minimum number of clients you need. Is it a feasible number? if no, raise your prices a little. If the number seems awfully low-double check your prices, make sure they aren’t sky-high.

Make sure you are aware of your state laws regarding starting a home business, cleaning businesses and working in someone else’s home. You should also review and understand any tax issues and payroll if you are planning on hiring anybody. You may also need to get a business license. These are often easy to get but may cost money.

You house cleaning business must be insured. You will be in people’s home’s and people may accuse you of stealing. You can be sued and lose everything. For this reason, you should not only get insurance to pay for something like that, but you should also start an LLC so that the things you own don’t get wrapped up in the businesses losses.
